It’s that time of year again! The “I’ve got nothing to wear because nothing fits” and post-Winter sluggish season! (Both thanks to Mother Nature’s attempt to help us hibernate and keep us warm and cozy during the winter months!). Every year, around this time, I do my usual “lighten up for Spring” program with my eating and in my life.
What does this mean?
It means I’ll be bringing more awareness to the foods I’m putting in my body, focusing especially on the cleansing and high-energy foods of Spring. It means I’ll be making sure my lifestyle habits are supporting, rather than detracting from, my health and my natural weight loss. And it means I’ll be thinking about nourishing the other aspects of my life that have also gotten a little sluggish lately, to make sure I’m “feeding” myself on all levels.
I won’t be dieting; I won’t be depriving myself and I won’t be making judgmental or critical comments about the way I look.
I also won’t be stressing a lot about these changes, but instead will be bringing a sense of ease and care into the action (Seriously, once you figure out the steps in this process of maintaining a healthy weight and comfort in your personal body, it’s EASIER than constantly struggling, counting calories, and wanting to throw the scale across the room. It’s easier than getting dressed 10 times in the morning, and it’s easier than dreading the beach or the pool).
If we haven’t met yet, I’m Karen Schachter; a social worker, holistic health counselor, psychology of eating expert and mom of two.
My first diet started in seventh grade.
I followed in my mother’s – and my grandmother’s – footsteps. Dieting (and trying to get your body different) was just a thing women did. When my body started to change with puberty, I was not happy. I remember eating “energy bars” or salads for lunch, counting calories, and obsessively feeling my stomach for bulges.
This diet led into a full-fledged eating disorder by the time I was a sophomore in high school. I battled my body constantly and most of my energy was tied up in concerns about eating and my weight.
Finally, when I was 23 years old, I had an epiphany…
The only way I was going to end my self-imposed torture was to “just do it.” It was then that I realized that instead of making food and body my enemy, I had to befriend it.
Fast forward many years later…
I became a clinical social worker so I could help people make gratifying changes in their lives, and then decided to incorporate my knowledge of and passion for food and nutrition into my work with clients.
I believe that girls and women have too much to do, too much to say and too much to share to be spending their valuable energy counting calories, struggling with their health and energy, or focusing on the size of their thighs.
I created this program because I want to show you how easy it can be to lighten up. Remember, this is a fresh approach – no counting calories or deprivation. I’m going to show you step-by-step how to release some winter weight gain, so you can feel great and move on to the more important things in your life!
